Stratos is employing sophisticated crop management techniques and equipment to accomplish its goal to become a world leading producer of low-cost, high yield sugarcane ethanol. Stratos plans to make significant investments in water irrigation technology. Back-up water supply and land preparation will ensure the longevity and productivity of the fields which include grading, leveling, initial nutrient and organic material installation and field layout.
Milling/Distillery:
Stratos has acquired and is making progress toward the relocation and expansion of its Estrella del Norte sugarcane mill. The company expects that the expansion, including the addition of a distillery, and relocation will be completed by the end of the third quarter of 2009. Production is planned to begin immediately following the completion of these initiatives.
Irrigation:
The company plans to draw water directly from underground aquifers, thereby avoiding difficult and often costly and labor-intensive efforts of using canals and/or pipelines. With a replenishing supply of water buildup underneath the plantation fields, feasibility studies have shown that there is ample water to supply to support Stratos’ planned operations. Wells will be dug to test the water and determine the best method for accessing it.
Land Sourcing:
Stratos is engaged in ongoing negotiations and land sourcing agreements with locals in the northern coastal regions of Peru and several large parcels of land have been secured. Land agreements are being drafted and finalized for much of the entire 48,000 ha needed for plantations to produce more than 180 million gallons per year of sugarcane ethanol.
Ethanol — particularly sugarcane ethanol — is a clean burning, high-octane biofuel. It is a renewable energy source and can be grown year after year. Pure ethanol, a grain alcohol produced from sources such as corn and sugarcane, is not typically used as a replacement for gasoline. Rather, anywhere from 10-85% ethanol can be integrated into a gasoline supply to reduce both oil consumption and fuel burning emissions that contribute to global warming. Sugarcane has become the primary fuel source for Brazil, a country that has successfully weaned itself from a dependency on foreign oil. Stratos believes that Peru is capable of growing up to twice the amount of sugarcane per hectare (ha)* than an equivalent operation in Brazil.
*A hectare (ha) is a metric unit used to measure area
1 ha = ~2.5 acres
